2021 Nobel prizes for physics

2021 Nobel prizes for physics were awarded to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann for understandig complex systems, and Giorgio Parisi for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate. Those areas are very important to understand global warming. After there initial works, we have an web-based interactive application of climate simulation for free, called En-ROADS.

En-ROADS

Thanks for introducing En-ROADS in my favorite energy related podcast, The Energy Show (“Practical Global Warming Solutions”, Oct 20, 2021) and an clean energy website article, Cleantechnica.com, I would like to touch briefly what I learned from En-ROADS.

How to promote decarbonization and prevent from global warming

  • If we continue current status and are doing nothing, temperature will become 3.6 degree higher at 2100.
baseline
  • Even an extream senario that we took all steps, temperature will become 1.0 degree higher at 2100.
All_but_growth
  • At th extream senario, growth (increase of population and/or economic growth) does not have effects on increase of temperature, suggesting that sustainable growth has been achieved in terms of decarbonization.
All_with_growth
  • Electrification of only transportation has limitted effects.
Only_EV
  • Decarbonization of energy has moderate effects.
No_carbon_energy
  • Transportation electrification plus decarbonization of energy has more effects.
No_carbon_energy_EV
  • Carbon price has strong effects.
